[FST] Arthur, or. . . : An England FST

It's been a while since I've had a go at the whole FST thing, but like my old America one, this is also composed primarily of music taken from the vaults of Things Your Parents Listen To.

Warning: some mild language, a lot of Ray Davies.

[ALTERNATE COVER]

(The art used in the first cover is from here, and yeah, these were totally fun to make. Anyway.)

Our first song was originally written for a failed BBC drama, but as the title of its CD (and this FST) implies, there are quite a few parallels between 'Arthur' and England, including the latter's fall from grace as the world's largest empire and life since.

1. Arthur- The Kinks

Arthur was born just a plain simple man
In a plain simple working class position
Though the world was hard and its ways were set
He was young and he had so much ambition
All the way he was overtaken
By the people who make the big decisions
But he tried and he tried for a better life
And a way to improve his own condition
If only life were easy it would be such fun
Things would be more equal and be plenty for everyone
Arthur, the world's gone and passed you by
Don't you know it, don't you know it
You can cry, cry all night but it won't make it right
Don't ya know it, don't ya know it

Arthur we know and we sympathize
Don't ya know it, don't ya know it
Arthur we like you and want to help you
Somebody loves you don't you know it

How is your life and your Shangri-la
And your long lost land of Hallelujah
And your hope and glory has passed you by
Can't you see what the world is doing to ya
And now we see your children
Sailing off in the setting sun
To a new horizon
Where there's plenty for everyone
Arthur, could be
That the world was wrong
Don't ya know it, don't ya know it
Arthur, could be
You were right all along
Don't ya know it, I hope ya know it
Now we know and we sympathize
We'd like to help you and understand you
Don't ya know it, don't ya know it
Somebody loves you, don't ya know it
Don't ya know it, don't ya know it

Arthur the world's gone and passed you by
Don't ya know it, don't ya know it
You can cry, cry all night
But it won't make it right
Don't ya know it, don't ya know it
Arthur we read you and understand you
Arthur we like you and want to help you
Oh! We love you and want to help you

These next two concern the 'Pirate' part of 'Pirate Gentleman'. Imperialism, rum, sodomy, et cetera, and England's heyday.

2. When the Ship Comes In- Bob Dylan

A song will lift
As the mainsail shifts
And the boat drifts on to the shoreline.
And the sun will respect
Every face on the deck,
The hour that the ship comes in.

Then the sands will roll
Out a carpet of gold
For your weary toes to be a-touchin'.
And the ship's wise men
Will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watchin'.

Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin'.
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal
And know that it's for real,
The hour when the ship comes in.

Then they'll raise their hands,
Sayin' we'll meet all your demands,
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered.
And like Pharaoh's tribe,
They'll be drownded in the tide,
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered.

3. Shanty for the Arethusa- Decemberists

We set to sail on a packet full of spice, rum, and tea-leaves.
We've emptied out all the bars and the Bowery Hotel.
Tell your daughters do not walk the streets alone tonight
Tell your daughters do not walk the streets alone tonight.

Tell the tale of the jewess and the mandarin chinese boy
He led her down from her gilded canopy of cloth.
And through her blindfold she could make out the figures there before her
And how the air was thick with incense, cardamom and myrrh.

So goodnight, boys, goodnight
Say goodnight, boys, goodnight

And three songs dealing with England's relationship with America, starting with a fated battle in the rain.

4. It's Raining Again- Supertramp

Oh, it's raining again
Oh no, my love's at an end.
Oh no, it's raining again
and you know it's hard to pretend.
Oh no, it's raining again
Too bad I'm losing a friend.
Oh no, it's raining again
Oh, will my heart never mend?

You're old enough some people say
To read the signs and walk away.
It's only time that heals the pain
And makes the sun come out again.
It's raining again
Oh no, my love's at an end.
Oh no, it's raining again
Too bad I'm losing a friend.

La, la, la...

C'mon you little fighter
No need to get uptighter
C'mon you little fighter
And get back up again.

It's raining again.

And ignoring all you actually know about The Wall and this song, moving on to the aftermath of that fight.

5. Comfortably Numb- Pink Floyd

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am.

I have become comfortably numb.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.

But I have become comfortably numb.

...and ending with, well.

6. Get off of My Cloud- The Rolling Stones

I live in an apartment on the ninety-ninth floor of my block.
And I sit at home looking out the window
Imagining the world has stopped.
Then in flies a guy who's all dressed up like a Union Jack,
And says, I've won five pounds if I have his kind of detergent pack

I said, Hey! You! Get off of my cloud.
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud.
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud.
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd
On my cloud, baby.

The telephone is ringing.
I say, "Hi, it's me. Who is it there on the line?"
A voice says, "Hi, hello, how are you,
Well, I guess I'm doin' fine."
He says, "It's three a.m., there's too much noise
Don't you people ever wanna go to bed?
Just 'cause you feel so good, do you have
To drive me out of my head?"

Since Hetalia's main storyline actually does take place during WWII, here's a song about England and his involvement.

7. Mr. Churchill Says- The Kinks

Well Mr. Churchill says, Mr. Churchill says
We gotta fight the bloody battle to the very end.
Mr. Beaverbrook says we gotta save our tin.
And all the garden gates
And empty cans are gonna make us win.

We shall defend our island
On the land and on the sea.
We shall fight them on the beaches
On the hills and in the fields.
We shall fight them in the streets.
Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed to so few
'Cos they have made our British Empire
A better place for me and you.
And this was their finest hour.
Well Mr. Montgomery says,
And Mr. Mountbatten says,
We gotta fight the bloody battle to the very end.
As Vera Lynn would say
We'll meet again someday
But all the sacrifices we must make before the end...

Did you hear that plane flying overhead?
There's a house an fire and there's someone lying dead
We gotta clean up the streets
And get me back on my feet
Because we wanna be free.
Do your worst and we'll do our best,
We're gonna win the way that Mr. Churchill says.

And his warfare in general.

8. Iron Hand- Dire Straits

With all the clarity of dream
The sky so blue, the grass so green.
The rank and file and the navy blue
The deep and strong, the straight and true.

The blue line they got the given sign.
The belts and boots marched forward in time.
The wood and leather the club and shield
Swept like a wave across the battlefield.

Now with all the clarity of dream
The blood so red, the grass so green.
The gleam of spur on chestnut flank
The cavalry did burst upon the ranks.

Oh the iron will and the iron hand
In England's green and pleasant land.
No music for the shameful scene
That night they said it had even shocked the queen.

Well alas we've seen it all before.
Knights in armour, days of yore
The same old fears and the same old crimes
We haven't changed since ancient times.

The token Beatles and Famous British Figurehead song all in one go.

9. Her Majesty- The Beatles

Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl,
but she doesn't have a lot to say.
Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl
but she changes from day to day.

I want to tell her that I love her a lot
But I gotta get a belly full of wine.
Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl
Someday I'm going to make her mine, oh yeah,
Someday I'm going to make her mine.

And speaking of bad habits...

10. Have Another Drink- The Kinks

Has everybody got problems?
Are you stuck in a deadend job?
Frustrated and dissatisfied?
Are you on the edge of suicide?
Terrorist bombers on the left,
Fascist plots on the right.
Mass destruction and homicide,
Are you horrified and terrified?
Such a shame.

We've all got problems we know,
There's one thing that's for sure,
There's only one cure for all your hangups and all your depressions.

Have another drink it'll make you feel better,
Have another drink and you'll feel alright.
If you feel down and you're under the weather
Have another drink and you'll feel alright.
(Repeat above four lines).

Facts and figures.
Filling out forms.
Reading circulars.
Dictating letters.
Is your occupation
Getting to your brain?
Is there no relief?
It's like a ball and chain.
There's no need to get depressed,
Worrying won't make it better.
There's only one consolation I can recommend.
Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself.

I normally avoid songs solely about specific locations, but this one was too good for me not to include. For where England is, London is also.

11. London Song- Ray Davies

There's a room in a house in a street in a manor in a borough
that's part of a city that is generally referred to as London.
It's a dark place, a mysterious place
And it is said that if you're born within the sound of Bow-Bells
you have the necessary qualifications to be christened a Londoner.
[It's a cruel place, it's a hard place]
But when you think back to all the great Londoners
William Blake, Charles Dickens, Dick Whittington,
pearly kings, barrow boys, Arthur Daley, Max Wall
and don't forget the Kray twins.

But if you're ever up on Highgate Hill on a clear day
you can see right down to Leicester Square [London, London]
Crystal Palace, Clapham Common, right down to Streatham Hill
North and South, I feel that I'm a Londoner still. [London, London]

Chiswick Bridge to Newham and East Ham
Churchbells ring out through the land.
You were born in London, England.
[London, London, through the dark alley-ways and passages of London]
.
.
When I think of all the Londoners still unsung
East-enders, West-enders, Oriental-enders
Fu Manchu, Sherlock Holmes, Jack Spot, Henry Cooper,
Thomas A'Becket, Thomas Moore, and don't forget the Kray twins

There's a part of me that says "Get out"
Then one day I'll hear somebody shout
"Sounds to me like you come from London Town."

And this one deals with a rather strange stage in England's cultural development. But hey, he is kind of a hooligan.

12. Anarchy in the U.K.- The Sex Pistols

Right! Now ha, ha,
I am an antichrist.
I am an anarchist.
Don't know what I want,
But I know how to get it.
I wanna destroy the passerby.

'Cause I wanna be Anarchy.
.
.
Is this the M.P.L.A or
Is this the U.D.A or
Is this the I.R.A?
I thought it was the UK,
Or just another country.
Another council tenancy.

I wanna be Anarchy.
Know what I mean?

And I wanna be an anarchist.
Get pissed,
Destroy!

And a gentleman, when he wants to be.

13. Englishman in New York- Sting

I don't drink coffee, I take tea my dear
I like my toast done on the side.
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I'm an Englishman in New York.
.
.
I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York.
I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York.
.
.
If "manners maketh man" as someone said
Then he's the hero of the day.
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile.
Be yourself no matter what they say.
.
.
Modesty, propriety can lead to notoriety.
You could end up as the only one.
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candle's brighter than the sun.

Takes more than combat gear to make a man.
Takes more than license for a gun.
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can.
A gentleman will walk but never run.

The last one can speak for itself, I think.

14. I'm Afraid of Americans- David Bowie

I'm afraid of Americans.
I'm afraid of the world.
I'm afraid I can't help it.
I'm afraid I can't.
I'm afraid of Americans.
I'm afraid of the world.
I'm afraid I can't help it.
I'm afraid I can't.
I'm afraid of Americans.

Johnny's in America.
Nah-nah-nah-nah nah-nah nah-nah-nah
Johnny wants a brain.
Johnny wants to suck on a Coke.
Johnny wants a woman.
Johnny wants to think of a joke.
Nah-nah-nah-nah nah-nah nah-nah-nah
Johnny's in America.
Nah-nah-nah-nah nah-nah nah-nah-nah
.
.
Johnny's in America
Johnny looks up at the stars.
Johnny combs his hair
And Johnny wants pussy and cars.

Johnny's in America.

God is an American,
God is an American.
